Enjoy this two hour guided walking tour where we will bring you back to the 19th Century in Barcelona, the city that welcomed the Modernist Movement with open arms. On Barcelona’s modernist area tour, you will discover the magnificent structures of some of Gaudí’s masterpieces. Also admire Lluís Domènech’s amazing buildings and many other renowned architects that shaped the city.
We will begin the tour with a wander up Passeig de Gràcia, one of the wealthiest avenues in Barcelona, which is filled with stunning Modernist architecture. These buildings are found in the Eixample district in the area known as “Quadrat d’Or” (Golden Square), which contains an extraordinary number of modernist buildings. The Modernist era left the city with a unique cultural heritage. We can see this with the fact that Barcelona is one of the cities with most buildings on the UNESCO World Heritage List, with nine entries, and all of them are works from the “Modernisme”.

The Eixample district not only is the most iconic in Barcelona, it’s also the most diverse in terms of shopping, restaurants and nightlife. The gridlike layout is the symbol of the sunny and modern Barcelona we know today.
Many of the houses in the Eixample date back to the 19th and early 20th century, when the architectural movement known as Catalan Modernism was in full swing. Leading Modernists such as Antoni Gaudí, Lluis Domenech i Montaner, and Josep Puig i Cadafalch all have buildings in the Eixample.

The Eixample is a district of Barcelona between the old city and what were once surrounding small towns, constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries.Eixample, which translates as “extension” in recognition of its status as the newer part of the city, is a large area north of Plaça de Catalunya spreading left and right of Passeig de Gràcia.

The Eixample is divided into two main sub areas: Eixample Esquerra (left) and Eixample Dreta (right). However, in total, six different neighborhoods make up this district.
At The Barcelonian we believe in sustainable tourism and authenticity, we accomplish this with small groups, our Modernism Tour is never larger than 20 people per group and we only provide this unique tour twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays at 16:00.
Eixample is a safe and residential part of the city but there is also a vibrant nightlife and a thriving café culture. Eixample is a beautiful neighborhood to wander round, take in the glorious architecture and people-watch from one of the many terrace cafes.
