Discovering Wine in the Catalonia Region

29 October 2020

Discovering Wine in the Catalonia Region

Located within less than 30 minutes from Barcelona, the El Penedès area offers us a unique combination of nature, culture and gastronomy. This region is one of the most important ones in Catalonia in terms of wine culture & cava- two important characteristics of this land. Its vineyards, wineries, rural accommodations and popular festivals enchant any visitor, offering a unique experience to remember.

El Penedès, the land of wine and cava

Today, this territory is made up of the “Alt Penedès”, “Baix Penedès”, and “Garraf” regions, and has the quality seal name: “DO Penedès”. The mainstream quality wine regions in Spain are commonly referred to as denominaciones de origen protegidas (DOP) (this is similar to the French quality control version of Appellations) and the wine they produce is regulated for quality according to specific laws, and with the compliance of the European Commission Regulation (CE) 753/2002.

Thanks to the influence of the sun and the Mediterranean Sea, El Penedès has become a privileged territory for the cultivation of vineyards. White wines are especially noteworthy, with grape varieties such as Macabeo, Xarello and Parellada.

 Recommended tours and activities

If you are going to stay in Barcelona for a few days, it is essential that you make a day trip from Barcelona to the El Penedès area, where you can enjoy a magnificent wine tourism experience. The Barceloian’s 1-Day Wine & Cava Experience will offer you door-to-door transportation to an organic winery, where you will enjoy the different vineyards through different elevations on an SUV tour on this family vineyard territory. Nevertheless, if your Barcelona trip will be longer and if you are a big fan of wine, we recommend our 4-Day Wine & Cava Experience. This 4-day experience includes full meals at high-end restaurants, transportation, your private tour guide, as well as all the different wine, cava, and olive oil tasting activities. We will even visit a well-known chocolate factory that produces cava flavored chocolates!  If you would like more information on private group tours in this area, please contact us here .

While Barcelona city tours can be done all throughout the year, we do recommend to book vineyard related activities either in Spring time or during Autumn, for the best experience.

COVID-19 measures for wine related activities

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, vineyard visits are still functional (depending on the status given by the regional government). However, the trip will only be restricted to visiting the vineyards and the possibility of purchasing the wine bottles from that vineyard. Wine tastings and food will not be provided until further notice.

 Barcelona private tours

Although we are currently living through a difficult time that is not allowing us to fully enjoy activities such as visiting vineyards and wine tasting, it is highly recommended to book such activities ahead of time. Since vineyard visits are most enjoyable during the Spring and Autumn seasons, the places are always limited due to high demand. With flexible cancellation policies during 2020 and until mid 2021, you may book your private tour ahead of time with 100% refund upon cancellation.
